Golf Tournament

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to take an opportunity to invite you to be a part of a golf tournament for Rob. For those of you that don't know, Rob's main passion before his accident was golf. In an effort to try and get him back to the game, we are having a fundraiser golf event to purchase a Solorider golf cart for him. This cart has a hydraulic seat which will raise him up to an almost standing position so that he will golf with his old clubs and his old golf swing. I hope that many of you will be able to participate. Please see the flyer below. Thank you for your continued support and prayers. Please email us if you would like to attend so that I can send you a better copy of the flyer.

Thank you,
Heather

4 months out!

Hello everyone! Again I find myself apologizing for not writing in a while. Life is just so busy that when I have time to just sit, I usually don't want to be on the computer.

Rob is doing well, and he is getting physically stronger and able to do more things everyday. We only have about 2 weeks of outpatient rehab left, and then hopefully we can say goodbye to Harborview. Don't get me wrong, they have given us great medical care, however, if you have been there before, you know that it is not the most pleasant place to spend your time. We started going to UW every month for their spinal cord injury forums where we learn about a different topic every month. It is also a good chance to meet other wheelchair users who can offer great advice about everything from car buying to childcare.

Rob is currently spending his days on the computer trying to advance his skills and also researching a new career. Hopefully, God's purpose for his life will become clear soon because we have not been too successful on our own. Without getting into too much detail, Rob was hired by a company called Roof, Truss Supply and then they told him 2 days before his start date that they had hired someone else without any explanation. The only thing that we can think of is either someone was intimidated by Rob or they did not want to put up with his current condition because they hired him the day of the interview and were completely excited about it. Then they lied and won't return phone calls. Honestly, I have never seen or dealt with a more rude, disrespectful and unprofessional business than RTS.

If anyone has any ideas, suggestions or knows of something to recommend to Rob, please feel free to email us. He is really open to anything at this point as his is pretty much starting from scratch. He has owned his own business for 6 years and has always worked in construction. He needs a change and luckily for him, he is a quick learner and motivated to do a great job at whatever he chooses. We just need to figure out what that may be.

Kailyn is doing well, she is almost 9 months now. She has 4 almost 6 teeth and is crawling backwards and pulling herself up to standing. She becomes frustrated easily as she would love to be moving around better but can't seem to figure out forward crawling. She now eats some real food including soft fruit and cheerios. She really appreciates when I allow her to feed herself. She is still huge which Rob hopes will remain through high school so he will worry less about her!

I am back to work full time and very busy. Nothing much more exciting going on other than taking care of the baby and house. We started going swimming every week with the baby which has been really fun for me. She seems like a natural swimmer already and truly loves being in the water. Plus, it is good exercise for Rob and is good spending time together as a family.

I should have the details soon on the golf tournament benefit for Rob so I will be posting soon. We hope to receive some emails from you guys that are still listening to me ramble on. I appreciate your continued support and prayers. If you have any ideas at all on job/career choices, please do not hesitate to email us.

Love,

Heather

Benefit Concert

I just talked to Dem and I want everyone to mark this event on their calendars. He has planned another benefit concert for Rob, and we hope to sell out the venue again.

Sunday, February 18 (Monday is a holiday so no excuses!) at 8:00 pm
High Dive in Fremont (Seattle for those out of town)
The Mob Law will be performing (I have heard they are very good!!!)

There is a $20 cover charge and the proceeds will go to Rob.

Please come and show your support, hear the great band, and meet some great friends. Please call Dem or email us if you have any questions.

It's been a long time!

Praise God that we made it through these last few weeks. We have had great support from our family during this rough time. As you will read, I have been pretty sick and our schedule only gets busier. I am so glad that we have each other, our family and friends, everyone reading this blog and above all else, God is on our side.
Thank you!

Well as you can see life is returning more to normal. I am back at work, Kailyn is back to school, and Rob is exploring new work and business opportunities. We have been really busy with weekly outpatient appointments for Rob in between my work schedule. They are mostly focusing on the advanced things now like getting on and off the floor from the wheelchair, which Rob is doing quite well. Physically, I think that he can conquer anything. I think that we still need a lot of continued prayer and support to beat the mental game. It seems like everyday there is a new challenge that we must face. It will be nice when some more time as passed and life can return to a more normal pattern.

Kailyn is doing well. She has had a lingering virus for what seems like months but I think that she is slowly returning to herself. She is learning how to pull herself up onto her knees, and thinks that she is actually strong enough to stand. Unfortunately, her body is not as ready as her mind, and we had our first fall. She tried to pull up on the edge of the bathtub and by the time I got to grab her(for the 3rd time) she had already bumped her forehead. It was the first painful cry I have seen her have, but she pulled through great. She is tough just like dad.

For those of you that have not heard, about 2 weeks ago I became very ill within hours. Gail had to take me to the ER with a 104 degree temp and as it turned out, I have mono. I later developed a double ear infection so after my doctor put me on antibiotics and prednisone, I am feeling much better. Still a little tired, but I think that I am so used to that feeling, I am able to just move on unaffected. I know, before you say it!, that I need to be smart and take care of myself, it is just hard sometimes. There needs to be more hours in the day.

We have discussed many options for a wedding and still have not come to a clear arrangement. I think that we are going to wait until summer of 2008 so that we have time to plan and our life will be a lot smoother by then. I am having a lot of fun researching though, and we hope to start visiting some venues in the next few months. We are also in the process of finding a car for Rob. We have the hand controls that my parents got already, we just have to find the big "hooptie" that Rob wants. I think that he is leaning towards a Cadillac Deville because he thinks it will give him enough room to pull the wheelchair through. We plan on physically testing this theory this weekend when we go car shopping. Rob has been meeting with various great people about jobs as well as starting his own business again. We want to explore all avenues before a decision is made. Until then, he is home all week and open to visitors if anyone has a day off. I am gone M, W and F for work so he could use the company. Also, please read the blog soon, as Demian and their friends are having a charity concert to help raise money for Rob's golf cart. We can't wait to get him back on the course. He went for a test drive in the Solorider and it looks like it is going to work with a few minor adjustments. I will keep you posted!

With love,
Heather

Starting Therapy Again

I keep getting worse and worse at making time to post. I started work back up again on Monday and we started outpatient therapy on Tuesday so things are busy around our house. Kailyn and Rob both have a cold so that is not helping any.

Rob met with his outpatient physical therapist, occupational therapist, vocational rehab, and rehab psychologist all on Tuesday. Needless to say, it was a long day at Harborview. Everything went well and it looks like we will have about 6-8 weeks of outpatient therapy. We received some good news on the driving situation though. It looks like there is no course required so as soon as we buy a car for Rob and install hand contols, he will be driving again. Also, he is exploring his options for starting his business again just changing the direction that it is headed. We will let you know more details later. He is also looking forward to playing golf again. We have decided to purchase a Solo Rider Golf Cart, which has a haudraulic seat so that Rob can golf with his old clubs and old golf swing. It is pretty expensive so I think my dad is going to put on a golf tournament to raise some money and Dem is going to have another band concert. We will also update you on details for these events if you would like to participate.

We have been thinking of ideas for where and when to have a wedding but nothing has been decided as of yet. Kailyn has been very busy lately as she is cutting her 3rd tooth and trying to teach herself how to crawl. She looks like a fish flopping out of water at this point, but today she began to get herself into the correct position and puch backwards. Time to baby proof!!

We thank you for your continued support and prayers. Please feel free to email us if you would like to come visit or just say hi.

Love,
Heather

Great News to Share

I just wanted to let all of you know that Rob and I got engaged last night. He proposed at midnight, and I was very excited and surprised, which for those of you that know me, know that it is very difficult to pull off a surprise on me. He managed to do it from the hospital which is an amazing feat. Thank you to his family who helped him pull it off.

We are finally started to feel better from the vicious cold that is going around. Each day we conquer new obstacles and things get easier and faster with practice. We will start outpatient therapy on the 16th to help learn new skills and advance the old. Please continue to pray for his therapy and recovery efforts to go well.

Love,
Heather

Home at Last

Well, Rob and I are finally home together with Kailyn. We have been so busy since last Wednesday. Chaffey homes remodeled our place but due to the 4 days with no power, we were not quite finished when Rob arrived. We spent all day and all night Monday and Tuesday trying to get it ready for him to come home. I know I should not have had such high hopes about what I wanted to accomplish when he arrived because the day he got there, the painter was there and all of the furniture had been moved to the middle of the room. There was only one hallway that Rob could take his wheelchair. Since then, we have almost finished the place. I still have to put together and organize a few things, but we are about 80% there. We celebrated Christmas Eve at Rob's parents with a big group of people and had a blast. Rob felt good but was really tired when we got home. We then went to my parents on Christmas day. He did good there, but that night we both caught Kailyn's bad cold and have been trying to recover since.

Rob is coping well and adjusting to life at home. We still dont have his permanent wheelchair yet so we are making it work with what we have now. We hope that the rest of his home equipment will arrive soon so he will become more independent and continue to make progress in his recovery. We never realized how hard it was going to be to come home. There is so much that you dont think about from reaching into the cabinets and fridge, to wheeling around doors in the bathrooms. I keep telling him that it will take time to get used to all the different obstacles at home, but he thinks that he should do everything perfectly the first time. You know Rob!!

I would like to thank you for continuing to read the blog. Rob has read it now and is also reading emails so feel free to send him an encouraging message. I will try to update you at least weekly on our progress. I will be busy soon as I plan on going back to work and Rob also starts his outpatient therapies 2-3 times per week so I will need to drive him to Harborview. We hope to have a get together at the beginning of the year so that those of you that have been waiting to see and talk to Rob will get a chance to do that.

Love,

Heather

Rob is Home! Yesterday Rob came home to his new place, remodeled by Chaffy Homes-Thank You! Thank You to everyone who has been following this and praying for Rob's recovery. Our family is truly blessed to have so much support, we couldn't have gotten through this without our wonderful friends. There is a plan in progress for a welcome home party, we will post the details when we figure them out. For now we are so grateful that Rob pulled off such a strong recovery and that he is home in time for Christmas. Happy Holidays!

Almost Home

For those of you that do not know yet, we are expecting Rob to come home on December 20. I have been busy getting the home modifications together as well as the organization of the move. We have been blessed by Chaffey homes, who graciously volunteered to do our bathroom remodel as well as putting in all hardwood floors. Everyone at Chaffey has been very helpful during this time and Rob and I both are extremely grateful.

Rehab is going good now that the medical problems are out of the way. We learned how to transfer to my car this week and how to wheel outside on Seattle's terrible sidewalks. We also went on our first outing to a Quad Rugby event, and let me tell you, those guys are intense. Rob met a bunch of the guys and found it very helpful to hear that things are going to get better by someone that has been through it.

I will let you guys know more as the week continues. I am at home with a sick little girl today. Please pray that she get well soon. I think that she may have picked up one of the many Harborview Bugs!

Thanks to those of you that are still praying, emailing and visiting.

Love,

Heather and Kailyn(who is in my lap as I am typing)

Many Updates

I am sorry that I have not been able to post lately. It is really hard to do from the hospital and I have not gone home too much. We have been really busy lately both in and out of the hospital. I am currently trying to get our apartment construction done so that we can move to the new unit before Rob gets home. Also, I think that Kailyn may be teething because she has been more high need lately. Imagine that, my kid high need!

The week after Thanksgiving Rob did very well. He attended therapy everything and had been making enormous progress in his rehab. He started a weight lifting routine to strengthen his upper body and had more than doubled what he could do by himself. We were definately thinking that we were getting close to all of his goals so that he can be discharged soon.

Apparently, Robs body had different plans for us. It seems like just as things start to get better, something slaps us in the face and we have more obstacles to conquer. Well that slap came last Friday morning. Rob awoke with terrible stomach pain and chest pain. They started running a bunch of tests and taking care of the ailments that they found. Some fluid accumulated around his lung, which had to be drained. We are thinking now that he may have also had the flu. His physical symptoms seem to be better although they keep finding more tests to run which is very frustrating to all of us.

Rob was able to do a little therapy yesterday in between having some testing done. I think that as of yesterday, the doctors say that we are in the clear and should not have to endure any more at this time. We are planning on doing all of therapy for the rest of the week. For those of you that have not heard, we now have an estimated discharge date of December 20, if we can get Rob's list of goals taken care of by then.

On a positive note, Kailyn visited last night for the first time in a while and she is now eating baby food. Rob was so excited to see her eat. Her current favorite is sweet potatoes and she devours her serving in about 5 minutes and begins screaming for more. I think she gets her eating habits from her father! Then after eating, I placed her in Robs arms and he was able to give her a bottle for the first time since the end of October. What a huge bonding experience to be with my baby and her father during such an emotional time. That kid brings so much joy during the most troubling times. I have some pictures to show you guys as soon as I get home to do a post.

Please think about us this week and pray that Rob have no more obstacles and that we can just focus on rehab until discharge on the 20th. Please also pray that I can get our home ready before he gets there so it will be just as he left it the morning of November 1. Thank you for the continued support and prayers. I will try to keep you in the loop more as things settle down a bit.

Love,
Heather
